Just after 10 a.m., a construction crew accidentally struck a 2-inch gas line while working near the Oak Meyer Gardens neighborhood, sparking immediate safety concerns.

Precautionary Measures Taken

In response to the strong smell of gas wafting through the air, school administrators acted quickly, making the decision to relocate everyone on the premises. “There was a precautionary evacuation that took place this morning at the Académie Lafayette Oak campus,” noted a school representative. They moved students and staff to the school’s soccer field while experts assessed the situation. At no point were students or staff in any danger, as confirmed later by the authorities.

Officials from the Kansas City Fire Department reported that their measurements showed no elevated levels of gas within the school building itself. “After an investigation by the gas company and the Kansas City Fire Department, we were cleared to return to the building. The leak has been capped, and thankfully, the situation was handled effectively,” the statement continued.

Spire Gas crews arrived on the scene promptly to fix the ruptured line. The winds, blowing at about 8 mph from the south, also contributed to spreading the gas odor, which likely prompted multiple calls from nearby residents concerned about the situation. It was reassuring to hear that no injuries were reported, and that KCFD remained on-site until the gas flow had completely stopped.
