Kansas City Prepares for Garmin KC Marathon: Road Closures and Exciting Events This Saturday!

Watch Out for Runners in Kansas City This Saturday!

This Saturday, October 19, Kansas City is buzzing with excitement as it hosts the much-anticipated Garmin KC Marathon. If you’re planning to head out in midtown, you might want to alter your route a little bit to avoid any detours. That’s right—roads will be closed to make way for thousands of enthusiastic runners, joggers, and walkers participating in this spirited event!

Road Closures to Expect

Starting bright and early at 7 a.m. and running up until 2 p.m., the marathon will see major roads like The Paseo, Broadway Boulevard, and Ward Parkway closed off. These closures will create a safe environment for all the athletes as they navigate through the course. It’s worthwhile to keep in mind that stretches around the Country Club Plaza, midtown, and downtown Kansas City will also be impacted, so plan your travels accordingly to avoid frustration!

A Diverse Race Route

The marathon kicks off at Frank A. Theis Park, which is conveniently located across from the iconic Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. As racers take off, they’ll trot past some of Kansas City’s most beloved landmarks such as the World War I Museum & Memorial, Waldo, Westport, and the vibrant 18th & Vine area, adding a unique touch to their running experience.

Whether you’re an avid runner or just interested in cheering from the sidelines, there’s plenty to look forward to. The events include a 5K, 10K, half-marathon, and a full marathon, catering to participants of all fitness levels. The 5K is relatively short and stays within the Plaza, while the 10K moves out towards Ward Parkway North and Roanoke Parkway. The half-marathon is a bit more challenging, taking racers through Westport and along Gillham roads, then onto The Paseo and 18th & Vine. Finally, the full marathon encompasses everything, making it a real test of endurance!

Tight Timing for Runners

It’s essential for marathon participants to be mindful of the time—there’s a six-hour limit for completing the full marathon. Runners must maintain a pace of 14 minutes per mile to finish on time. If they haven’t reached the halfway point by 10:30 a.m., they will be redirected to the half-marathon route. Once the marathon’s official support starts to wrap up, participants who are behind will be sent to the sidewalk to ensure everyone’s safety.

Parking Information

If you’re planning to support a participant or just want to explore the festivities, parking is available at various locations. Good news: there are lots on UMKC’s Volker Campus and in the Country Club Plaza, just a few blocks away from the start line. With almost 3,000 parking spaces across the Cherry Street Garage and Rockhill Garage, you have plenty of options. Keep in mind, though, that it’s first come, first served, so arriving early might save you a spot!

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re lacing up your shoes to run or simply wanting to enjoy the buzz in the air, the Garmin KC Marathon promises to be an invigorating day in Kansas City. Remember to adjust your plans if you’ll be driving through midtown, and keep an eye out for runners—you might even feel inspired to join in the fun!
