If you’re in Kansas City, you’re in for a treat! The Urban Neighborhood Initiative (UNI) is gearing up for its third annual fundraiser, and this year it comes with a fresh twist that’s sure to get the community grooving. Mark your calendars for October 10, when Theis Park transforms into a vibrant evening of music, food, and camaraderie at the “Recess! Jam Session.”
What’s better than a night filled with incredible R&B music? This outdoor concert is not only a chance to enjoy some fabulous tunes but also a key fundraiser aimed at helping improve the neighborhoods on Kansas City’s east side. Hosted by the talented Joseph “Jo Blaq” Macklin, a producer who has worked with big names like Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber, the evening promises to bring the community together to support a great cause.
The event kicks off with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. and the music beginning at 7 p.m.. You can enjoy yourself with general admission tickets going for just $40, offering open lawn seating. If you’re feeling fancy, opt for a VIP ticket for $150, which comes with reserved seating, drink tickets, and some delicious food options. Remember, these tickets are available at bit.ly/UNIConcert2024, so grab yours ASAP!
If you’re a foodie, you’re in for a treat as well. The event will host a variety of food trucks serving up delectable culinary delights. Just a heads up, however—this concert is a 21-and-over event, with alcohol sales on-site. For security reasons, you will have to adhere to a clear bag policy. General admission guests should think about bringing lawn chairs or blankets for comfy seating, while VIPs can sit back and relax on chairs provided by the organizers.
In typical Kansas City fashion, “Recess! Jam Session” is a rain-or-shine event. So, whether the sun is shining or raindrops are falling, you’re encouraged to come out ready for all the fun. Parking will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for general admission attendees, but VIP ticket holders will find it easier with reserved parking. According to UNI’s administrative director Shalom Jima, “It’s a perfect thing for people to come to after work.”
Founded in 2012, the Urban Neighborhood Initiative focuses on empowering ten neighborhoods on Kansas City’s east side through a holistic approach to community development. Their mission is vital—to tackle issues of disinvestment and neglect to ensure that every resident has access to decent resources, affordable housing, and opportunities for their children. “We know that east side has had decades of neglect and under-investments for a long, long time,” Jima explains.
UNI is not just about musical events; it also actively engages in housing development, community programming, and necessary home repairs. Remember that abandoned school they bought? They’re turning it into a community center! They’re also working on building 39 townhomes called The Crescendo to provide better housing options for residents. In 2023 alone, they’ve delivered 94 free home repairs to assist lower-income families.
With a track record of reaching over 17,670 individuals through various programs in 2023 alone, UNI is having a significant impact on the community. So, if you want to enjoy an evening filled with soul-soothing music while contributing to such an important cause, don’t miss out on the “Recess! Jam Session.” Tickets are available at bit.ly/UNIConcert2024, and for more details about UNI and its efforts, visit their official site.
Join in, bring your friends, and be part of a night of moving and grooving that not only promises a great time but also helps create a brighter future for Kansas City’s urban neighborhoods.
