After Half a Century, Function Junction to Close its Last Store, Signifying End of an Era in Kansas City’s Culinary Scene

Function Junction To Shut Its Last Store After a 50-Year Journey Across Kansas City, Midwest

A Comprehensive History of Function Junction

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Function Junction, the store that has filled numerous kitchens across Kansas City and the Midwest, is closing its last store after a successful 50-year run. Known for its unique, meaningful, and high-quality specialty kitchen items, the store’s presence will indeed be missed.

Founder and co-owner, Mary Merola expressed her feelings towards the store’s long journey, “Truly every day was a joy. I’ve had 47 amazing years being my own boss, living my dream, running a successful business.”

From Humble Beginnings to Setting Trends

Merola started Function Junction in the 1970s. She realized that there was a gap in the market for specialty products to help people be successful at home cooking and presentation. She stepped in and filled the need.

In her quest to provide the best cookware, Merola set trends across the country by sourcing items from all over the world. From Italy to Portugal and from Finland to France, she traveled extensively to find unique tools. “I want to know they are equally as serious as the tool in your garage.” Merola expressed passionately about her quest in sourcing the right tools for her consumers.

More Than Just a Store, It’s An Experience

Merola’s store offered a unique shopping experience. Products ranged from simple items like lemon squeezers and wooden spoons from France to more elaborate pieces like pasta makers from Italy. At its peak, Function Junction expanded across 17 stores, with the buying power capable of sourcing and redesigning products from across the globe, and providing consumers in Kansas City with an incredible selection at excellent value.

The Inspirational Entrepreneur

Merola’s journey has been a source of inspiration for many. She started her business at the age of 23 and has proved that age is no barrier to entrepreneurial success. Aaliyah Timmons, a employee at Function Junction, admires Merola for her tenacity and determination. “It’s inspiring…I need to get on my stuff,” Timmons said.

A New Chapter

However, after 50 glorious years of running a successful enterprise, Merola is ready for a new chapter. The final location of Function Junction will close its doors in June.

As the store prepares to cease operations, a grand sale is underway offering customers a last chance to purchase items. “That doesn’t ever happen at Function Junction,” says Merola, referring to the rare discount event.

Despite closing her store, Merola encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to realise the importance of knowing their craft, suggests having an understanding of the business, and stresses on finding the right business partners.

What’s Next for Merola?

Unfazed by the closure of her store, Merola suggests she has plans for the future that involve packaging all the things she loves doing and presenting it to the world. “I love to cook,” she says. “I have loads of great recipes. I know the industry, and I love talking with people. I’m going to take all the things I love doing, package them, and there will be something coming.”
