Hey there, Kansas City! If you were out and about near the riverfront this Wednesday morning, you might have caught wind of an event that added a bit of excitement to the day. The mission? To round up seven elusive goats that have been roaming free along the Riverfront Heritage Trail. And guess what? The mission was a complete success!
Animal services officers woke up bright and early, gathering at dawn to tackle the challenging terrain where these goats managed to call home. This area, with its rocky slopes by the Missouri River and dirt paths that hugged the nearby train tracks, is definitely the kind of place where goats feel right at home. But the team was ready for the challenge!
Ryan Johnson, the chief animal services officer for KC Pet Project, reported that the operation “went really well.” He wasn’t alone in this goat-capturing adventure; they also enlisted the help of goat farmer Margaret Chamas, who brought her expertise from the farm to aid in the roundup. Talk about assembling a dream team!
The plan involved physically herding the goats into an enclosed area. Officers fashioned makeshift barriers from portable fences, vehicles, and wooden pallets. Can you imagine the sight? It must have been a lively scene as officers worked together to coax the goats into a waiting trailer. To keep the energy up, they were all at it until around 10 a.m., when finally, the last goat hopped on board. Victory!
Now that the goats are safely in custody at the KC Pet Project’s Swope Park campus, they will spend the next five days in the outdoor livestock area, affectionately known as “the farm.” The hope is that an owner might still come forward to claim these furry friends. But given the mystery of where they came from—especially after their initial arrival during a grazing program back in August—it seems likely that new homes will be found for them.
Initially, there were ten goats that appeared around the Missouri River’s banks, which were part of an environmentally friendly initiative to sustainably clear brush. After capturing three of those goats earlier, none were claimed by their owner. The remaining seven had continued their game of hide and seek until this successful roundup.
If no one claims the remaining seven goats by the end of their five-day stay, they’ll be up for adoption. And, who can resist the charm of goats? If you’re in the market for a new pet and are a fan of these cheeky little critters, this could be your chance!
