In a surprising turn of events, two young men from the Kansas City area have been indicted by a federal grand jury for possessing illegal machine gun conversion devices. The indictment, which was returned under seal, became public only after the brothers were arrested and had their initial court appearances.
Demetrius Harris, known to friends and family as “Meech,” is just 24 years old and hails from Kansas City, Missouri. His younger brother, Darius R. Harris, affectionately nicknamed “D” or “D2,” is 22 years old and resides in nearby Raytown, Missouri. It’s quite a shocking situation when you consider how closely knit families can be, and the impact this can have on their loved ones.
Demetrius has been charged with one count of illegally possessing and transferring machine guns. According to the documents, he allegedly had an Anderson Manufacturing AM-15 multi-caliber rifle fitted with an AR-type machine gun conversion device as well as two other similar devices on January 24, 2024. That’s not something you hear every day, right?
On the other hand, Darius faces two counts related to illegally having and transferring machine gun conversion devices. The indictment points out that he allegedly was involved with Glock-type conversion devices on two different occasions: October 30 and November 9, 2023. It seems both brothers found themselves wrapped up in some serious business!
You might be wondering what these machine gun conversion devices actually are. Often referred to as “switches” or “auto sears,” these little mechanisms can modify a semi-automatic firearm to operate like a machine gun. In simple terms, they allow multiple rounds to be fired with just a single pull of the trigger. Sounds pretty dangerous, doesn’t it? These devices are classified as machine guns under federal law, which means their possession, sale, or use is illegal.
The indictments were made public following their arrests, and if you’re curious, Demetrius Harris had his initial court appearance just today, while Darius’s appearance is scheduled for later on November 14. The cases are being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Brad K. Kavanaugh, while the hard work behind the scenes is being conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Talk about a serious investigation!
These incidents raise a lot of questions regarding firearm regulations and the community’s safety. As local residents, it’s essential to stay informed and understand the laws concerning firearms and conversion devices. Keeping our communities safe should be a top priority for everyone involved.
For a lot of folks, hearing news about young people getting tangled up in legal trouble can be disheartening. Perhaps this serves as a wake-up call to not only young adults but to the community as a whole about the importance of understanding the laws surrounding firearms and being cautious about the choices we make.
As we wait for more updates on this developing story, let’s hope for a safer future, free from the chaos these devices can bring into our streets.
