In a heartfelt ceremony set to take place this weekend, the vibrant community of Kingdom City, Missouri is coming together to pay tribute to some of its bravest heroes—firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice. This special occasion will honor Capt. Raymond Wynn, Firefighter Tad Russell, and Firefighter Lloyd Ruediger, all of whom devoted their lives to keeping the community safe.
Caught up in the whirlwind of everyday life, we sometimes forget the risks that our firefighters face each time they answer a call. Capt. Raymond Wynn, a dedicated firefighter in Kansas City, tragically lost his battle with occupational cancer in March 2021. This weekend, his legacy will shine bright as the community gathers to remember his selfless service. Capt. Wynn was more than just a firefighter; he was a family man, a mentor to young recruits, and a pillar in his community.
Another name on everyone’s lips this weekend will be Firefighter Tad Russell, who served with the Brumley Fire Protection District. Russell passed away in August 2021 due to complications arising from COVID-19. His dedication to his role and the camaraderie he shared with his fellow firefighters earned him a special place in the hearts of many. The loss of Russell is still felt deeply within the community and by his firefighting family.
Also remembered will be Firefighter Lloyd Ruediger, who served the New Haven-Berger Fire Protection District. Ruediger passed away from a heart attack in June 2023. Much like Wynn and Russell, Ruediger’s dedication to responding to the needs of others serves as a poignant reminder of what it means to be part of the fire service. Their sacrifices are a testament to the unwavering spirit of firefighters everywhere.
The weekend of remembrance kicks off with a candlelight vigil on Saturday, October 5, at 7 p.m. This intimate gathering will provide an opportunity for family, friends, and fellow firefighters to share stories and reflect on the incredible legacies of these fallen heroes. After all, fire service is a tight-knit community built on teamwork, tradition, and trust. As State Fire Marshal Tim Bean eloquently put it, “When a firefighter falls, we all grieve and come together to ensure that they are honored and remembered.”
The events continue on Sunday, when the State Fire Marshal will join firefighters and families for a memorial service. This official ceremony promises to bring everyone together to support those who have lost loved ones in the line of duty. “We will never forget the heroes who paid the ultimate price for their brave service,” Bean emphasized, reminding us all of the valiant efforts of those who protect and serve our communities every day.
In a show of solidarity, Governor Mike Parson has proclaimed October 6 as Fire Service Memorial Day in Missouri. As part of the observance, the Missouri State Capitol dome will be lit up in red from sunset on October 5 until sunrise on October 6. This visual representation of honor serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the state’s firefighters.
This weekend offers us all a chance to come together, not just to celebrate the lives of Capt. Wynn, Firefighter Russell, and Firefighter Ruediger but to reflect on the bravery demonstrated by firefighters across the state. Let’s stand united as a community, honoring those who have dedicated their lives to protecting and serving us.
So, mark your calendars and join the community as we honor these heroes! Together, we can ensure that their legacies live on, reminding us of the strength and bravery found within our fire service family.
