On a chilly Saturday in Fairway, Kansas, the spirit of giving was alive and well as hundreds of coats, hats, gloves, and other cozy items were donated for Project Warmth 2024. This annual campaign, led by a combination of community partners, aims to keep individuals and families toasty during the frigid winter months.
This year, the mission was supported by a number of amazing organizations. Among them were local Sam’s Clubs, where people dropped off their generous contributions, as well as community centers that opened up their doors for this noble cause. Participants lent a helping hand to ensure that everyone in need would receive the warmth they deserve.
So what happens next with all these wonderful items? Well, next week, the dedicated volunteers from The Salvation Army will roll up their sleeves to sort through the vast donations. The goal is simple yet impactful: to prepare the items for more than 30 community organizations that will distribute them to both adults and children who need a little extra warmth in their lives.
With winters in Fairway being known for their biting cold and hazardous wind chill, the importance of this event cannot be overstated. As Karla Schuning, the Corporate Engagement Director for The Salvation Army, notes, “Because the winters get so cold and the wind chill can be very extreme and dangerous for our individuals, we want to try to provide as much warmth, help, and hope to the individuals on the street and to the kids in our community.”
For many children, winter means walking to school through the brisk air. It’s crucial that they stay warm and safe, and this initiative aims to bundle them up and ensure they have the necessary gear to make that journey a little more comfortable.
Want to join in on the warmth and support your community? It’s not too late! There are several ways to make a difference through this initiative. You can participate in the Angel Tree program, which helps provide gifts to families in need during the holiday season. You can also contribute by volunteering your time or by donating meals and other essentials to those who could use a helping hand.
If you or someone you know might be in need of assistance, resources are available. Support systems are in place to help individuals find the necessary aid, whether it’s for winter gear or other basic needs. It’s heartwarming to know that community members can step forward and help one another during challenging times.
As Project Warmth 2024 kicks off, it’s a reminder of the power of community. Each coat, each pair of gloves, and each hat donated brings warmth, hope, and joy to those who might otherwise feel the harshness of winter too acutely. Whether through donation, volunteering, or reaching out for help, everyone can play a vital role in bringing light and warmth to Fairway.
