The Kristkindl Markt will take place on Friday, December 6, from 5 PM to 9 PM, and Saturday, December 7, from 10 AM to 7 PM at the Kansas City United Church of Christ, located at 205 W. 65 St.. Expect to see anywhere from 3,000 to 5,000 participants flocking to this enchanting fair. The charm of a traditional European market is recreated right here in our beloved Kansas City!

What’s Happening at the Markt?

Visitors will be greeted with an array of authentic German food, festive live music, and a variety of local vendors. From delicious Christmas cookies to hundreds of charming gingerbread houses, the church’s fellowship hall transforms into a winter wonderland. Families can even partake in a German-language Christmas service that adds a special touch to the festivities. And let’s not forget about Father Christmas, who will be making an appearance, ready for some festive photos!

A Rich History with a Creative Twist

The origins of the Kristkindl Markt date back to 1993, when the congregation, then known as the Country Club United Church of Christ, decided to bring a little slice of Germany to Kansas City. Inspired by a previous visit to Germany, Rev. Rodger Kube envisioned a festive gathering filled with food, music, and crafts that would not only entertain but also serve as a fundraiser for their community.

Over the years, the event has evolved, moving indoors in 2009 with each subsequent year offering new surprises thanks to dedicated volunteers and fresh leadership. Co-chairman Randall Penn has played a pivotal role, blending his architectural talents to create the image of a lively German village with artwork that adorns the walls. Meanwhile, co-chairwoman Jenna Gredeman echoed the excitement, saying, “It’s nice to have our name out there!”

Baking and Music: A Match Made in Heaven

The heart of Kristkindl Markt is undoubtedly the gingerbread house decorating activity. Longtime volunteer Theresa Hall has made ingenious changes to ensure success, shifting from fragile gingerbread to resilient milk cartons as a foundation, allowing children to unleash their creativity with candies and frosting!

As visitors enjoy their culinary delights, they’ll be treated to lively music performances from various acts including polka bands, choirs, and even the Alpen Spielers. The atmosphere encourages dancing, laughter, and a vibrant sense of community.
