KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Recently, drivers passing by the iconic Nelson Atkins Art Museum may have noticed roadwork underway on Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard. This ongoing construction is part of a strategic “Road Diet” aimed at enhancing safety for all road users, as outlined by the city’s Vision Zero initiative. City Manager Brian Platt explains the concept of a road diet. “Essentially, this means we’re reducing the road width to limit speeding. The construction will reduce traffic lanes from three to two in certain sections while also introducing dedicated bike lanes.
Timeline for Completion

After witnessing numerous accidents on the Boulevard, they mobilized their community, gathering over 200 signatures from fellow residents to advocate for safer conditions.
Correll shared, “It’s one thing to see the stats, but it’s another when you’re on the scene after an accident, waiting for emergency help.” The duo took their concerns directly to the city officials, sharing before-and-after photos of accidents to highlight the necessity for swift action.

Clairbourne stresses the importance of compromise in making substantial changes. “You may not get everything you want, but if it means reducing even one accident, it’s worth it,” he explained. Their collaborative efforts connected various community groups, neighbors, and local businesses to bolster support, rising to meet a common goal of fostering a safer roadway.
