Revitalizing The Heart Of The City
Lee’s Summit, MO — The city of Lee’s Summit is proceeding with a master plan that has been in the works for over a decade, aiming to improve it’s farmers market and infuse life into the downtown area. The city officially broke ground earlier in 2024 on the ambitious project, titled Downtown Market Plaza.
The vision for the Plaza, according to Mayor Bill Baird, is to create a “park-like” venue. The new area will host a variety of amenities including the farmers market, an outdoor performance venue, the Skyscape Pavilion, a boutique hotel, apartments and a restaurant. Mayor Baird says the aim is to make the Plaza intimate and welcoming, a place that lures visitors compelling them to explore more of the city.
Budgeting For A Brighter Future
Back in 2013, the city set aside funds specifically to upgrade the farmers market. Over the years, they have been continually building up these savings and mapping out the plans for the Plaza. Currently, the city has a solid $40 million dedicated to the project, with more than half of this sum in cash. The rest of the funds are expected to come from grants and naming sponsorship opportunities.
The Heights Of Anticipation
Small business owners are thrilled about the momentum the project will bring. Nicole Perne, co-owner of a bookstore in downtown Lee’s Summit, is optimistic about the increased traffic from families. Despite having a few reservations about potential parking issues in the area, Perne believes that the Plaza will promote a family-friendly atmosphere as it offers more to attract day-to-day family activities.
To address concerns about parking, the city maintains that recent traffic studies suggest there won’tbe a need for extra parking facilities. The Plaza will be strategically located next to the city hall’s parking garage, planned to optimise space usage.
