In the charming historic town of Parkville, just a stone’s throw away from downtown Kansas City, a delightful new restaurant has opened its doors, and residents couldn’t be happier! If you’re like me, always on the lookout for a great place to grab a meal without trekking downtown, you’re in for a treat! Welcome to Prima Facie, the latest foodie haven that promises a delightful experience right in the heart of Parkville.
Owned by local residents Leon and Heather Versfeld, this bistro isn’t just another dining option; it’s a labor of love meant to nurture the community. They’ve transformed a former bank into a cozy yet stylish bistro and sweet little coffee shop that combines modern vibes with a hint of nostalgia.
As Heather explains, “Everyone is so excited for us and happy to be here, and we are grateful to be able to give back to our community.” With Leon operating the restaurant while also serving as a local immigration attorney, it’s clear they want to serve Parkville well. Leon shared, “I’m done with work and I come down here and I meet so many more people!”
What’s cooking at Prima Facie? Well, the menu is designed to appeal to all kinds of diners. You can expect to find fresh seafood and classic Kansas City beef dishes, coupled with a variety of drinks ranging from captivating teas and coffees to refreshing boba. Plus, they serve all-day breakfast, sandwiches, soups, and grab-and-go lunches to keep things interesting!
On a recent Saturday night, we decided it was finally our turn to check out what all the buzz was about. As we walked in, we were greeted by a warm atmosphere filled with lively chatter and a projector screening an old Carey Grant film — talk about ambiance!
As soon as we sat down, our friendly waiter whisked over our cocktails. I opted for the ginger lemon drop ($16) — a zesty, refreshing drink with a delightful sugar rim, while my fiancé chose the mezcal old fashioned ($16), adding a smoky twist to the classic favorite. Both of these drinks quickly became conversation starters!
For appetizers, we couldn’t resist the calamari frito ($16) and crab cakes ($20). Typically skeptical of seafood in the Midwest, we were pleasantly surprised! The calamari was just right — lightly battered and accompanied by a sage aioli that took it to another level. However, the true star of the show were those crab cakes, made with blue lump crab and served with a light salad and cilantro emulsion. Honestly, they were so good; we could’ve eaten a dozen!
Moving on to the main courses, I ordered the filet mignon ($42), made from grass-fed beef tenderloin, served with whipped potatoes, asparagus, and a luscious bordelaise sauce, while my fiancé chose the roasted salmon ($32). Oh, my goodness! I found one forkful of my steak taken before I had the chance to savor it, while the salmon packed in flavor with its citrus beurre blanc and bacon accompaniments – I think I might have to start training for a marathon just to keep up with indulging in such deliciousness!
As if that wasn’t enough, we rounded out our meal with a phyllo brownie ($10) that was recommended by Leon. This decadent dessert came wrapped in a flaky pastry and was paired with house-made ice cream, making for a sweet ending to our evening. If you’re lucky enough to have room, take Leon’s advice and try asking for a second scoop of ice cream — it’s worth it!
From great food to an inviting atmosphere, Prima Facie checks all the boxes for a fabulous dining experience. As I left, it was clear this place isn’t just another restaurant; it’s a warm hub for the community, bridging neighbors and offering everyone an unforgettable evening out. It looks like there’s finally a reason for Parkville residents to stay local for a night out. So why not make a reservation for your next meal? You won’t regret it!
