This summer, Kansas City witnessed an incredible act of community spirit and support as the United Way of Greater Kansas City stepped up to aid families affected by violence. The organization contributed a whopping $1.2 million to assist shooting victims injured during the jubilant Chiefs’ Super Bowl celebration this past February. Among the families receiving much-needed help was the Arellano family, a 11-year-old boy named Samuel and his parents, who experienced unimaginable hardship after a shooting incident.
February 14 was supposed to be a day of celebration for young Samuel, who was out with friends celebrating the Kansas City Chiefs’ historic Super Bowl victory. What turned into a festive parade quickly took a turn for the worse when Samuel, while frolicking with his buddies, found himself a victim of gun violence. A bullet grazed him, missing his lungs by a hair’s breadth. The reality of being shot at such a young age changed everything for him and his family.
In the wake of this traumatic experience, the Arellanos faced numerous challenges. They never expected the overwhelming outpouring of support that came their way in the days and weeks that followed the incident. When the KC Strong Fund started distributing funds to those affected, the Arellano family found themselves in a position to address some pressing needs. “Helped a lot in different ways,” said Samuel’s father, Antonio Arellano, reflecting on the positive impact of the assistance they received. “The financial part was important. It’s been a big help because we were struggling before that.”
One of the most heartwarming aspects of this story is Samuel’s dream to watch a Chiefs game live at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. The financial support made this dream a reality. He got to attend the Monday night football game against the New Orleans Saints, and the excitement was palpable. “I’m glad I’m here, because if I didn’t get that money I wouldn’t be here,” said a beaming Samuel, who spent the game cheering for his favorite team.
It’s no secret that healing from a traumatic event is a lengthy process. While Samuel is still focusing on his physical recovery, he’s also taking important steps for his mental health by visiting a therapist. Through such efforts, he is finding ways to navigate his fears and emotions from that dark day. When asked about his experience and how he feels now, he said, “Thank you United Way for giving us a lot of money and helping us with our medical bills — go Chiefs.”
This story is a testament to the strength and resilience of both the Arellano family and the greater Kansas City community. What could have been a defining moment of despair has instead transformed into a powerful narrative of recovery supported by generosity and compassion. Samuel’s unwavering spirit, paired with the invaluable support from organizations and individuals who care, showcases how communities can rally to make a significant difference in the lives of those facing adversity.
As the Chiefs season continues, Samuel Arellano, like many young fans, will carry these experiences with him — a symbol of hope and strength that encourages everyone to come together in times of need. With heartfelt joy, the Arellano family continues to cheer for their favorite team, reminding us all that even in the darkest times, light can shine through.
