Pendleton Heights is a historic neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri. It is located near the downtown highway loop, between Paseo and Chestnut Trafficway on the west and east sides and Independence Avenue and Cliff Drive on the south and north sides.
Pendleton Heights is Kansas City’s second oldest, especially residentially built area, behind Quality Hill. It is Kansas City’s earliest constructed suburb, platted in the late 1800s from the 200-acre (0.81 km2) Jones Farm.
The neighborhood is home to three city parks (North Terrace Park, Independence Plaza Park, and Maple Park), the city’s original reservoir, one of two nationally recognized urban scenic byways, and the city’s largest concentration of real Victorian residences. “Traditional Victorian,” “American Craftsman,” “American Foursquare,” Italianate, Eastlake, Shingle-Style, Richardsonian Romanesque, “Folk Victorian,” “Kansas City Shirtwaist,” Beaux Arts, and majestic Queen Anne are among the architectural styles. Tiffany Castle is a historic mansion built in 1909 on the bluffs overlooking the East Bottoms and the Missouri River below. In 1990, the Philip E. Chappell house at 1836 Pendleton Avenue was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
The Pendleton Heights Community Garden first opened its doors in early 2013. This initiative collaborates with PHNA, Kansas City Community Gardens, and MU Extension. Residents can rent plots for personal gardening or work on community plots for a portion of the yield. On the vacant land at Lexington and Montgall in 2013, PHNA and KC Parks & Recreation planned an orchard to provide fresh fruit and nuts. Peach, apple, fig, pecan, pawpaw, and serviceberry tree varieties have been planted in Northeast Kansas City since 1860. Jerusalem Farm is an intentional Catholic community that provides residential curbside composting once a week..
Scuola Vita Nuova Charter School, Garfield Elementary School, and Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences are among the schools.
The first Saturday in December is the annual Holiday Homes Tour and Artist Market. Select Victorian homes adorned for the holidays are open for tours, and things for sale are available at neighborhood artist booths. This Old House named Pendleton Heights one of the “Best Old House Neighborhoods in the US” in 2013.
