Chilly Thanksgiving Ahead for Kansas City Travelers

Hey there, Kansas City! As we gear up for the season of feasting, it looks like we need to prepare for a bit of a chill in the air. Yep, you guessed it! According to the latest from the National Weather Service, the days leading up to Thanksgiving are going to feel pretty cold, so bundle up if you’re heading out!

Cold Snap Hits the Metro

It seems the first wave of winter decided to pay us a visit early this week. Temperatures took a nosedive, dropping into the lower 20s early Tuesday at Kansas City International Airport. With brisk winds blowing at around 5 to 10 mph, it felt even chillier, with wind chill temperatures hitting an icy 12 degrees! Brrr!

But there’s some good news. Despite the cold start, clear skies should allow the temperatures to bounce back to about 47 degrees during the day—just a touch cooler than the average for this time of year, which is around 49 degrees. Don’t expect it to stay warm overnight, though; temps will dip back into the cozy mid-30s, so keep those jackets handy!

What’s in Store for Wednesday?

As we move into Wednesday, get ready for another crisp day. Expect temperatures to hover around the chilly mid-40s. There’s also a chance for some light rain showers, so if you have any outdoor plans, you might want to grab an umbrella just in case. And for those in northern Missouri, there could be a little mix of snow with that rain overnight, but the weather service assures us not to worry about any significant snow accumulation.

Thanksgiving Blast of Cold Weather

Now, let’s talk about the big day itself—Thanksgiving! A big blast of even colder weather is headed our way just in time for the holiday. According to the weather experts, temperatures will struggle to break into the upper 30s during the afternoon, unless you’re down south, where it might be a tad warmer. In the metro area, expect a daytime high of about 39 degrees on Thanksgiving Day!

With temps set to gradually drop over the weekend, we’ll be looking at an even chillier Sunday around the freezing mark. When the sun goes down, those overnight temperatures will plunge into the teens and 20s, so definitely keep those home-cooked leftovers warm and cozy!

Dry Weather on Friday, with a Chance of Snow

Fortunately, Thanksgiving and Friday look to be dry, so you can focus on stuffing your bellies with turkey and all the fixings without worrying about rain or snow ruining your plans. However, a little clipper system passing through could bring light snow. The weather service is keeping an eye on this, with central and eastern Missouri having a 20% to 40% chance of more than an inch of snow. Kansas City, in particular, might only see a light dusting if the conditions are just right.

It’s still a bit early to determine exactly how much snow we might get on Saturday, so let’s keep our fingers crossed that all of our favorite holiday plans stay intact.

Get Ready for a Cozy Holiday Season!

So, there you have it, Kansas City! As we approach Thanksgiving, make sure to bring out your warmest coats and mittens. As the holiday season kicks off, let’s cozy up with some delicious food, good company, and a warm cup of cocoa—just don’t forget to step outside and enjoy the crisp, fresh air. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
