Unified Government Reviewing Plans for Buc-ee’s Store in Kansas City, Kansas

Kansas City, Kansas – The Unified Government of Kansas City and Wyandotte County has confirmed the review of a development application for a new Buc-ee’s convenience store in proximity to the Kansas Speedway. This Texas-based chain is famed for its exceptionally oversized facilities, a prominent departure from the regular interstate convenience stores.

Proposed Location and Current Application Status

Krystal McFeders, Unified Government spokesperson, informed KSHB 41 News on Thursday that the specific location under review for the store is northeast of the 110th Street south of the Kansas Speedway. Current property records establish that the Kansas Speedway Corporation owns the land in question. The proposed Buc-ee’s location is just across the street from the Speedway’s administrative headquarters.

The Unified Government spokesperson also stated that the application is yet to be added to any Planning Commission agenda. An early review might be provisionally scheduled as early as June. Following the UG staff’s green signal, the Planning Commission will further scrutinize project details, including any incentive requests linked with the project.

About Buc-ee’s and its Expansion Plans

Buc-ee’s convenience stores debuted initially in 2003 along the Interstate 10 between San Antonio and Houston, rapidly gained popularity for more than just its vast facilities. The chain store has developed a cult-like following.

However, at this moment, a spokesperson from the public relations company collaborating with Buc-ee’s reported to KSHB 41 News that they had “no information to share at this time.” Moreover, numerous scheduled locations are listed on Buc-ee’s official website, planned to open in the next few years:

  • Smiths Grove, Kentucky – 2024
  • Amarillo, Texas – 2025
  • Brunswick, Georgia – 2025
  • Rockingham County, Virginia – 2026
  • Boerne, Texas – 2026

Unified Government’s Next Steps and Related Actions

Following the UG Planning Commission’s review and recommendations, the final decision about this famed Texas store’s application would fall into the hands of the Unified Government’s Board of Commissioners.

In a parallel effort, Mickey Ary, City Administrator of Cass County suburb Peculiar, has launched a campaign through social media urging residents to petition Buc-ee’s for a location in their city, bisected by the Interstate 49.
