Good morning Kansas City! As the sun rises over our beautiful city, we can expect a lovely start to the day. While we soak in some morning sunshine, we should prepare ourselves for some changes later on in the day. Clouds from the east are slowly making their way westward, so this afternoon might feel a bit more overcast than what we’re used to as we transition into fall.
Today’s temperatures are predicted to warm up into the upper 70s, which is quite pleasant for a late September day after experiencing highs in the lower 80s just yesterday. But hold onto your hats! A little bit of a breeze is expected, courtesy of the outer effects of Hurricane Helene. While we’re enjoying a beautiful Friday here, Hurricane Helene is making quite the impact on the southeastern part of the U.S., leaving us only to enjoy a breezy day.
Lucky for us, the rain is staying put in eastern Missouri and isn’t expected to make its way to our area. That’s a bit of a mixed bag, considering we recently experienced some much-needed rain that had eased drought conditions a bit. However, the forecast reveals that we should brace ourselves for a stretch of dry weather ahead. It looks like we won’t see any rain for about a week or so!
As we peek ahead to Saturday, the forecast looks pretty bright and sunny as well! Expect temperatures to climb up to nearly 80 degrees with that same cheerful breeze hanging around. Sunday seems like more of the same, with highs keeping right around that 80-degree mark. If you’ve got plans to be outdoors, it looks like you’re in luck!
Now, with this impending dry spell, it’s important to remember to take care of those newly seeded lawns or sod you might have put down. Many of us like to take advantage of this time of year to overseed or lay down new grass. However, with the anticipated lack of moisture, you’ll definitely want to keep those sprinklers going. If you’ve recently used fall fertilizer, make sure to stay on top of watering it; otherwise, your lawn might not be getting the necessary nutrients it needs.
Interestingly, even though we typically receive an average of about 3.25 inches of rain in October, September has brought us only about 2 inches, which is half of what we usually expect. With weather models showing a low chance of rain in the coming weeks, it looks like we’ll be relying on our trusty sprinklers to maintain healthy lawns.
Now, while we sit here in the Sunshine State of the Midwest, the Southeast is facing severe conditions due to Hurricane Helene. Reports are coming in about devastating flooding from Florida to Virginia. This storm intensified rather quickly, reaching a strong Category 4 hurricane just hours before making landfall. Wind gusts have been recorded at astonishing rates, some hitting 100 mph!
Residents in those areas are facing significant challenges with high storm surges and sudden flooding. While it’s a busy week for meteorologists tracking this storm, it’s a reminder of how different weather patterns can be in various parts of the country.
As we move into the beginning of October, we can expect temperatures to trend slightly above average, with a nice fall front approaching next Tuesday. This could bring some cooler mornings, dipping down into the 40s by Wednesday!
That said, let’s keep our hopes up for a wet October, and let’s enjoy this beautiful, breezy weekend coming our way. Thanks for tuning in, and have a fantastic time soaking up the sunshine, Kansas City!
