Exploring Local Flavors

Kansas City has a delicious new offering just in time for Black History Month! A nonprofit organization known as KC GIFT has introduced the very first Black-owned restaurant passport in the city. This initiative, named “Savor The City,” is designed to highlight and celebrate the incredible range of Black-owned dining spots throughout the metro area.

What’s Inside the Passport?

So, what does this passport bring to the table? It serves as your personal guide to over a dozen popular, as well as some hidden gem, Black-owned restaurants in the Kansas City area. Imagine having a handy booklet that not only points you toward these fabulous dining establishments but also includes neat QR codes for menus! This means as you explore, you can scan to see what’s cooking and even jot down your thoughts, rating each dining experience from one to five plates. How fun is that?

A Taste of Diversity

The beauty of “Savor The City” lies in its variety. Whether your taste buds are craving snacks, cold-pressed juices, soul food, or something a bit on the modern side—like Southern cuisine with a twist—this passport has you covered. You can even dive into baked goods, pizza, vegan specialties, and seafood. It’s a delightful way to try something new while supporting local chefs and entrepreneurs!

Scattered All Over Town

You’ll find these inspired eateries spread across the entire Kansas City metro area, including hot spots like North Kansas City, downtown, midtown, Westport, Brookside, and Raytown. So no matter where you are, there’s likely a delicious stop nearby just waiting for you to discover.

Where to Get Your Passport

Excited to start your culinary adventure? You can snag the passport booklets for free at the GIFT Business Center on 5008 Prospect Ave. or at any of the participating restaurants. Some of the featured locations in the passport include famed spots like Ruby Jean’s Juicery, Vee’s Sweets and Treats, Black Wallstreet, and Niecie’s Restaurant.

Encouraging Exploration Over Discounts

Although the passport doesn’t offer discounts or prizes, the heart of this initiative is to simply encourage people to venture out and explore these wonderful local dining options. By doing so, you are not only treating your taste buds but supporting the growth of Black-owned businesses in Kansas City.

A Greater Mission

This project beautifully aligns with KC GIFT’s larger mission, which focuses on closing the racial wealth gap and promoting economic growth in neighborhoods that have historically faced systemic inequities. There’s a rising momentum around supporting Black-owned businesses, which is more important than ever given the ongoing challenges that these establishments face.

Join the Movement

Now is the perfect time to get involved and make a difference! Explore the rich culinary landscape that Kansas City has to offer, and partake in this meaningful initiative. As you peel back the layers of the city’s restaurant scene, you’ll not only delight in wonderful food but also help foster a supportive environment for local Black entrepreneurs. So grab your passport and get ready to savor the city like never before!
