Kansas City Commemorates a Historic Battle with New Markers
In the heart of Kansas City, an important piece of history is about to receive the recognition it deserves. On October 3rd, the Monnett Battle of Westport Fund is set to unveil a series of 10 historical markers that will interpret the Byram’s Ford Battlefield, site of the pivotal Battle of Westport, fought back in 1864.
A Momentous Ceremony
The unveiling will take place at 10 a.m. at a remarkable spot on the battlefield known as Bloody Hill. This area is steeped in history and is included in the National Register of Historic Places. If you’re interested in history or just want to learn more about your city, this event will be next to the new marker located on the south end of the concrete trail along Bloody Hill, just east of the Kansas City Water Services Department Building at 4800 E. 63rd St..
Honoring Our Heroes
One of the highlights of the ceremony will be the remarks from Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II, who will speak on the battlefield’s significance not just to Kansas City, but to the entire region. The markers themselves have been meticulously researched and designed by the Battle of Westport Fund, with generous funding from both the members of the Fund and the Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area.
These markers will help tell the story of a battle that resulted in a crucial victory for the Union forces, ultimately paving the way for the Missouri Emancipation Ordinance adopted weeks later. They will also shine a light on pioneering figures from the battle, such as Lt. Patrick Henry Minor, an African American leader who made history as the first regularly commissioned Black officer to command Black troops in combat.
Community Impact and Future Celebrations
But the event is not just about history; it’s also about improving the community today! The ceremony will spotlight recent improvements in the area, including a newly constructed walking trail that offers a chance for locals and visitors alike to walk through history while enjoying the beautiful surroundings.
This unveiling is part of a build-up to the BOW 160 commemoration, which will celebrate the 160th anniversary of the Battle of Westport on October 19th. It’s an exciting time filled with events, reflection, and remembrances of the sacrifices made by those who fought for their beliefs.
Looking Ahead
During the ceremony, the Fund will also announce the launch of the latest phase of the Saving Kansas City’s Battlefield Initiative. The project aims to raise an additional $1 million to further acquire land and make additional improvements. It’s an ambitious goal, but the passion of the community is palpable, and with continued support, it seems well within reach.
The Battle of Westport, which unfolded between October 21 and 23, 1864, was remarkable in its scale, with over 32,000 troops participating over a vast area stretching 7 miles east to west and 5 miles north to south. Notably, it’s one of only two battles in Missouri recognized as a Class A battle by the National Park Service due to its significant impact on the outcome of the war.
