In the charming city of Independence, Missouri, a heartbreaking story is unfolding that has left many scratching their heads and feeling deep sorrow. Just hours after her birth, baby Destinii Hope entered a world that would ultimately lead to profound tragedy. Born on August 22 to mother Maria Pike, Destinii’s story took a troubling turn when Maria confessed to hospital staff that she was homeless and struggling with her mental health. That was only the beginning of what would become a series of warnings that went unnoticed.
According to Destinii’s paternal grandmother, Talisa Coombs, the alarm bells were ringing early on. “They first called the department for social services because Maria said she felt like hurting herself,” Coombs shared in a recent interview. It was distressing enough for Coombs to wonder how Destinii could possibly be safe living in those circumstances.
Tragically, the situation for Destinii worsened. On November 7, during a domestic dispute involving her mother and father, police were called to the scene. According to family accounts, it was during this incident that gunfire erupted, resulting in devastating outcomes—Destinii lost her life, tragically shot while lying on her mother’s chest, and her mother succumbed to injuries from the same incident. Heartbroken, Coombs cannot help but think that systemic failures allowed this nightmare to unfold.
As she processed the reality of losing her granddaughter, Talisa Coombs reflected on all the times she reached out to Child Protective Services (CPS). “I even told these CPS people, I will take care of my granddaughter,” she recounted. The heart-wrenching frustration stems from feeling that the agency did not adequately protect Destinii or support her parents, even after troubling signs were displayed.
In the months leading up to the tragedy, there were multiple instances when CPS intervened. Coombs recollects one incident where Maria fled to the woods with Destinii, resulting in a hospital visit after a scare where Destinii reportedly needed CPR. “They brought the baby back to her father, but never gave him any paperwork. There were no guidelines or plans—nothing,” grieved Coombs. The grandmother continuously expressed her worries but felt her concerns were repeatedly dismissed.
In the days leading to the heartbreaking event, CPS attempted to reach the family numerous times but allegedly had difficulty making contact. Coombs’ husband, Brian Coombs, revealed a chilling encounter, “On the day the baby died, the couple had missed a meeting with social services and decided to drop off the radar. It was an opportunity for someone to step in that they let slip.”
When Coombs was finally asked to check on Destinii just hours before the police shooting, the request felt like a burden. She reflected, “They should have done that themselves. If they thought that baby was in danger, that’s their job.” Unfortunately, this lack of action led to devastating consequences.
In the days following the tragedy, family members are filled with questions that seem to have no answers. “We did everything we could,” stated Brian Coombs, “If they would have gone over there and done their job, the outcome would have been different.” With the community reeling from the dual loss of life, many find themselves questioning the effectiveness of Missouri’s child welfare system and whether it truly protects the vulnerable.
As the family navigates their grief, they are left pondering what could have been, while desperately seeking accountability and answers from the state. “Destinii would have turned three months old on Friday,” said Talisa Coombs, her voice breaking. “She was so happy. I got tons of pictures. All she cried about was being hungry or wet.”
With this tragic story at the forefront, many in the community are hoping to see reforms in how child welfare systems operate, particularly in cases that display warning signs of potential risk. Change is essential to prevent similar heartbreaking losses. Family and community members continue to hold their breath for a response from the Independence police as well as the state agencies involved, searching for answers and some semblance of justice for baby Destinii and her mother.
