As she processed the reality of losing her granddaughter, Talisa Coombs reflected on all the times she reached out to Child Protective Services (CPS). “I even told these CPS people, I will take care of my granddaughter,” she recounted. Coombs recollects one incident where Maria fled to the woods with Destinii, resulting in a hospital visit after a scare where Destinii reportedly needed CPR. “They brought the baby back to her father, but never gave him any paperwork. There were no guidelines or plans—nothing,” grieved Coombs. The grandmother continuously expressed her worries but felt her concerns were repeatedly dismissed.

In the days leading to the heartbreaking event, CPS attempted to reach the family numerous times but allegedly had difficulty making contact. Coombs’ husband, Brian Coombs, revealed a chilling encounter, “On the day the baby died, the couple had missed a meeting with social services and decided to drop off the radar. When Coombs was finally asked to check on Destinii just hours before the police shooting, the request felt like a burden. She reflected, “They should have done that themselves.
