Angela Wildflower Set to Captivate Kansas City with “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill”

Excitement Brews in Kansas City for Angela Wildflower’s Return

Kansas City, Kansas, is buzzing with anticipation as one of its own, Angela Wildflower, prepares to take the stage in a highly acclaimed production of “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill.” Scheduled to open on Tuesday, October 8, at the Kansas City Repertory Theatre’s Copaken Stage, this performance marks a significant homecoming for Wildflower, who is ready to share the riveting story of jazz legend Billie Holiday.

A Full Circle Journey

Angela’s journey in the world of performing arts has been nothing short of extraordinary. The Kansas City native has journeyed from the bright lights of Los Angeles and the buzz of New York to the picturesque landscapes of Whitefish, Montana, and even to the heart of South Sudan. All these experiences led her back to her roots, underscoring the idea that no matter where life takes you, home will always hold a special place in your heart.

“I feel blessed to have this opportunity,” Wildflower said during a recent phone interview. A one-woman show doesn’t come around very often. And this particular performance will not only showcase her talent but also dedicate itself to telling the deeply moving story of Billie Holiday, a woman who faced numerous challenges in her life yet left an indelible mark on music and culture.

Why Kansas City?

Though Angela has graced stages across the country, including Broadway shows like “Motown the Musical” and national tours of “The Color Purple,” her heart has always been tied to Kansas City. Many local fans were excited to see her return, but Wildflower admits that she wasn’t sure if the Kansas City Repertory Theatre would choose her for this role. “I’ve auditioned for other things here that I didn’t book,” she admitted. However, this opportunity felt right, like a perfect homecoming.

Roots That Run Deep

Having grown up as Angela Polk in Kansas City’s Schlagle High School, she embraced her passion for performing arts at an early age. Since then, she has made a name for herself, even tweaking her stage name to Angela Wildflower—a decision that, according to her, came after her agent suggested that her longer name needed shortening.

Angela has stayed true to her vision. “I’ve known what I was supposed to do since I was 9 years old,” she shared, emphasizing her commitment to acting, singing, and using her platform to help others, especially children. This passion led her to create arts education programs in various parts of the world, including her recent scholarship initiative in South Sudan.

Your Invitation to a Memorable Show

If you’re reading this in Kansas City, consider attending “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill.” The show opens at 7 p.m. and runs through October 27, with shows scheduled every Tuesday to Friday, and additional times on weekends. Tickets are reasonably priced between $44 and $70, and parking is conveniently available in the garage situated beneath the theater.

The play presents a fictionalized account of one of Billie Holiday’s last performances before her passing in 1959. Set in a South Philadelphia bar, this production will transport you back in time, featuring powerful musical numbers that include “What a Moonlight Can Do,” “Strange Fruit,” and “God Bless the Child.” While the production promises stunning artistry and creativity, it is worth noting that it addresses mature themes. Due to mentions of drug use, sexual violence, and racism, it is recommended for audiences aged 14 and older.

Wildflower’s Kansas City Pride

Angela’s roots in Kansas City are something she’s incredibly proud of. Despite her travels and experiences across the globe, she maintains a strong connection to her hometown. In fact, she still uses a phone number from the 913 area code, and her family remains right here in the city. “I’m very proud to be from here,” she emphasized, which serves as a heartwarming reminder that even as we journey far and wide, our beginnings always influence who we become.

Join the Celebration

As Angela Wildflower makes her return to the Kansas City stage, this is more than just a personal triumph—it signifies a reunion of artistry, community, and rich cultural heritage. Don’t miss your chance to witness an incredible performance filled with talent and emotion. Mark your calendars and prepare for an unforgettable experience with “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill.”
