Fresh Sounds from Kansas City: Alternative Rock Band Aiming Arrows Captivates Audiences

Fresh Sounds from Kansas City: Aiming Arrows Takes the Stage

Kansas City is buzzing with excitement as the alternative rock band Aiming Arrows continues to carve their niche in the vibrant music scene. Formed just two-and-a-half years ago during the chaotic uncertainty of COVID-19, this dynamic group consists of Jared Johnson, Alec Stockman, Emilio Estrada, and Jacob Newland. Each member brought their own unique musical backgrounds, which they happily blend into their distinct sound.

A New Beginning Amidst the Pandemic

With their former bands dissolving during the pandemic, these musicians found a reason to come together under the Aiming Arrows banner. “We really wanted something that was really authentic and not trying to be the cool guys or anything, and just kind of be ourselves,” says Johnson, the band’s charismatic frontman and guitarist. The band’s ethos is all about authenticity and creativity without confining themselves to just one genre.

The band loosely calls their sound “alternative rock” but makes it clear they want to keep things open-ended. Their inspirations range from the catchy riffs of Jimmy Eat World, the funky grooves of Incubus, to the heavy sounds of Thrice. This eclectic mix invigorates their music and reflects the diverse experiences of each member. For example, bassist Jacob Newland adds a touch of mathematical genius through his math rock background, while others contribute influences from their metal days.

Music That Speaks to the Soul

Since their first single, “Promises”, dropped in August 2022, Aiming Arrows has been on a roll, launching a total of seven singles. Their latest release, “Tides”, showcases a stark contrast between its lighthearted music video—featuring fun water gun battles—and its serious subject matter dealing with anxiety. It’s amazing how the band turned a slower original version into an upbeat anthem about emotional struggles.

No Better Time, their most streamed single to date, similarly dives into existential dread and regret. Johnson highlights that their songwriting process often mirrors the reception of their music—both deeply personal yet relatable for listeners. “I think the process that we went through to make it is indicative of how it was received,” he remarks.

Frontman Journey and Stage Presence

Even though Johnson is now confidently leading the band as a frontman, he admits that it was a learning process: “I didn’t grow up as a frontman or anything like that. I was always a guitar player first.” During live performances, the band’s self-deprecating humor shines through, making their shows not just concerts but enjoyable experiences. “We want to keep things lighthearted. That’s who we are as a group,” Johnson explains.

Upcoming Shows and Future Plans

Fans can catch Aiming Arrows performing at various venues across Kansas City, with their next show set for December 7 at the Westport Bowery, located at 817 Westport Road, inside the Westport Flea Market. Johnson reminisces about a standout performance at the Bowery last November, where they headlined alongside friends The Stacys and The Long Drive. The band went all out, even creating a Boy Meets World-style theme song to promote the gig, highlighting their playful nature.

While they have yet to venture outside of Kansas City for performances, the dream is alive for Aiming Arrows to explore nearby cities for weekend shows. They believe that expanding their presence is vital for growth as a band.

New Music on the Horizon

As for new sounds, Aiming Arrows is already in the works on a new single. They have opted for a strategy of releasing singles rather than a traditional full-length album, believing that it suits today’s music streaming landscape best. “It’s our opinion that the best way for a band to grow nowadays is putting out consistent singles,” Johnson states. With this fresh approach, it’s clear that Aiming Arrows is committed to staying connected with their audience.

In an ever-changing music industry, Aiming Arrows has certainly found their groove. With their mix of light-hearted performances, relatable themes, and solid music, they are definitely a band to keep an eye on in the months to come!
