‘Knowledge is power’: Hundreds expected to gather at 36th annual Aids Walk KC
Preparing for an Important Event
Based in the vibrant city of Kansas City, community members and AIDS activists are gearing up for a major event in the ongoing battle against HIV/AIDS. The city is set to host the significant 36th Annual AIDS Walk on April 27. This grand event has been meticulously organized by local advocacy groups such as the AIDS Service Foundation with the primary aim to boost awareness, support those devastated by HIV/AIDS, and amplify prevention and treatment efforts locally and globally.
Kimberly Carlson, president of the AIDS Service Foundation, noted the longevity of the event indicates the profound impact it has fostered. “The existence of the event over 36 years denotes that the community continues to respect those individuals who have succumbed to HIV and commemorate those who have left us. It also serves as a stark reminder that HIV continues to persist in our societies,” expressed Carlson.
The AIDS Walk: A Community Gathering
The much-anticipated AIDS Walk is scheduled to kick-off at Theis Park, with a ceremonial event commencing at 9 a.m. The event is expected to draw hundreds of people supporting the cause, which includes numerous individuals living with HIV/AIDS. Carlson articulated, “We are earnestly supporting the people in our community affected by HIV/AIDS. This event is not only a show of unity but also serves to reduce the stigma associated with this condition. We want them to know that they are not alone and we are here for them as the Kansas City community.”
HIV/AIDS: A Growing Concern
HIV/AIDS continues to be a growing health concern globally and within the metropolitan area of Kansas City. Based on data released by the AIDS Service Foundation, there are approximately 5,800 individuals living with HIV in Kansas City. Furthermore, the city records more than 200 new cases every year. Carlson highlighted how these figures paint a broader picture, “The data is revealing racial and ethnic disparities when it comes to new infections.”
A Day Full of Activities
Apart from the main event, organizers have strived to assemble a variety of entertaining activities for families. Through these collective initiatives, they aim to amass funds that support local charities assisting individuals suffering from HIV. “Knowledge is power, and knowing your status is the first step towards halting the spread,” remarked Carlson.
