Missouri Sees a Surge in Refugee Arrivals: What’s Behind the Numbers?

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – It’s been a big year for refugees in Missouri as the state welcomes a significant influx of newcomers seeking safety and a fresh start. The latest records from the Missouri Office of Refugee Administration reveal that the Show-Me State has resettled a whopping 3,273 refugees in the 2024 fiscal year, marking more than a two-fold increase compared to last year’s total of 1,563.

The Trend in Numbers

The resettlement process began on October 1st, and the numbers tell a compelling story. In 2022, Missouri welcomed 730 refugees, but as the world continues to face unrest and conflict, those numbers have soared. The shift is remarkable—the state has now reached about 76% of the capacity of its seven resettlement agencies.

Most of the new arrivals have settled in the bustling Kansas City and St. Louis metropolitan areas, with a diverse mix of individuals seeking refuge. Among them are not only refugees but also holders of Special Immigrant Visas, Afghan and Ukrainian Humanitarian Parolees, as well as Cuban and Haitian Entrants. The origins of these newcomers are varied, spanning across countries experiencing significant upheaval, such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Afghanistan, Somalia, Syria, and many more.

Federal Support and Future Plans

As this year wraps up, it’s important to know that the trend of resettlement isn’t stopping. In a recent statement, President Biden announced the Presidential Determination on Refugee Admissions for Fiscal Year 2025, targeting 125,000 admissions for next year. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the role of refugee resettlement as central to America’s identity, stating, “This exemplifies the generosity that has always been at the core of the American spirit.”

Who Exactly Qualifies?

So, what exactly is a refugee? According to the Missouri Office of Refugee Administration, a refugee is someone who is unable or unwilling to return to their country due to a well-founded fear of persecution based on race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion. Paul Costigan, the director of MORA, stressed that these individuals don’t arrive randomly; they undergo extensive vetting before being granted refugee status, ensuring a thorough process that often involves multiple federal agencies.

The Impact on Local Communities

Refugees don’t just bring stories of resilience; they also bring economic potential. Over a span of 15 years, refugees contributed nearly $124 billion to the U.S. economy, adding vibrancy and driving innovation in communities across the nation. In fact, it’s reported that refugees and asylees accounted for around $363 billion in contributions to the federal government through various forms of taxes.

What’s more, Costigan points out that most refugees are eager to work hard and contribute. “They don’t want to take handouts. They want to support their families just like they did back in their home countries,” he said. Interestingly, studies show that refugees have an entrepreneurial spirit and often start their own businesses, bringing fresh energy to the job market.

A Bright Outlook

The growing number of refugees arriving in Missouri reflects a strong commitment to humanitarian efforts, showcasing the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of community support. As these new residents start laying down roots, they not only help diversify the state’s cultural landscape but also infuse money and energy into local economies.

In conclusion, as Missouri continues to embrace those seeking safety, the state’s experience teaches us that compassion and community can lead to prosperity and growth. Here’s to welcome and support for those embarking on this brave new chapter in their lives!
