Kansas City Braces for Job Cuts as International Paper Shutters Local Plant
Kansas City residents learned some tough news on Monday as International Paper Co. announced its plans to close a packaging plant located on Clary Boulevard. This closure is set to have a significant impact, affecting 132 employees directly, as revealed in a WARN Act filing. But that’s not all; this is part of a larger wave of layoffs that will ultimately touch over 400 workers across four facilities in the United States, including locations in Cleveland, Tennessee; Rockford, Illinois; and Statesville, North Carolina.
A Double Whammy for Employees
This unfortunate announcement comes just two weeks after International Paper shared plans to lay off a staggering 650 employees nationwide. A representative from the Memphis-based company emphasized that the closures announced this week are separate from those earlier layoffs, reinforcing the gravity of the situation.
The Kansas City plant, known for its production on Clary Boulevard, is scheduled to officially close its doors on or before December 18. While this news is disheartening, the company has assured that affected workers will be provided with severance packages, outplacement services, and access to mental health resources.
