Kansas City Weather Update: The Dry Spell Continues
Good Sunday folks! As the sun peeked over the skyline of Kansas City this morning, we welcomed another cloudless sunrise. It’s hard to believe that we are now in the midst of a 26-day dry spell! The last time we saw any measurable rain here was on September 24th, when we recorded just 0.17 inches. And let’s not forget when this dry weather started, all the way back on the 5th of July! Time flies, doesn’t it?
Looking Back at July’s Rainfall
If you cast your memory back to the beginning of July, especially around the 1st and 4th, you might remember two significant rain events that led to flash flooding in areas south of I-70. These storms delivered between an impressive 4 to 8 inches of rain to some locations. Meanwhile, other regions to the north only received about 1 to 2 inches. This kind of contrasting rainfall has led to some oddities in our weather statistics. In fact, there are certain areas that have recorded a higher yearly total than what we measure officially at KCI airport.
The Numbers Speak for Themselves
So, what do the numbers tell us about our rainfall this year? Officially, we’re nearing a staggering 8 inches below average for the year! And since the dry spell kicked off on July 5th, we’re looking at a deficit nearing 9 inches. That’s quite a difference, and it certainly makes you appreciate the rain when it does come!
Two Parts to the Current Weather Story
Today, the weather story has two major components that we should talk about: the dry conditions and what the chances for rain look like, and then there’s the unseasonably warm weather. So, let’s dive into both of these points, shall we?
Dry Conditions Ahead
First off, it looks like the dry conditions will be hanging around for a bit longer. As we continue into fall, we’d normally expect some rain to help nourish the ground and boost the local foliage before winter grips the city. However, if you’re hoping for a quick turnaround, we might have some disappointed faces! As of now, any potential rain in the forecast seems to be just a glimmer on the horizon.
Unseasonably Warm Weather
What’s really interesting is the warmth we’re experiencing lately. While we’re all familiar with the pleasantly crisp days of fall, you might have noticed that things aren’t really cooling down as we’d expect. Instead, the temperatures have stayed unseasonably warm. If you’re like me and enjoy getting outside for some fall activities, I suppose we should consider ourselves lucky for these warmer temperatures.
Any Signs of a Cold Front?
As we look forward, the question on everyone’s mind is, “Is there any sign of a strong cold front?” Well, that’s still quite unclear! While we’ll be keeping our fingers crossed for some cooler air to sweep in, it’s all a waiting game. The details will certainly be flowing in shortly, and we’ll keep everyone updated.
Wishing You a Great Week Ahead!
As we wrap up this weather report, I wish you all a fantastic week ahead. It’s important to stay healthy and also, let’s not forget: Go Chiefs! Enjoy the warm days while they last, and let’s hope for some rain soon!
