Big Changes for Kansas City Theatre Scene
Kansas City, Mo. – Exciting news is making waves in the local theatre community! On Monday, the Kansas City Repertory Theatre, fondly known as KCRep, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) announced they will be parting ways after a partnership that has thrived for decades. This collaboration was originally set up to provide UMKC students and faculty a chance to dive into hands-on, professional theatre experience, and honestly, it has served that purpose well!
A Bittersweet Goodbye
In a recent press release, both KCRep and UMKC explained that while they greatly value their history together, the “growth of both organizations” has led to some challenges when it comes to space and scheduling. Therefore, it’s time for them to embark on separate paths starting June 30, 2029. This date marks the official conclusion of their agreement, but don’t worry! They’ve promised to continue their friendship as valued partners.
What’s Next for KCRep?
People are curious about where KCRep will showcase its future productions. While the statement was a bit vague about this, it did let us know that they are in the process of “charting a plan for their future.” Fans of the annual holiday classic, A Christmas Carol, can take a sigh of relief as the release ensured us that it will still be performed at UMKC even after the partnership officially ends!

KCRep’s Artistic Director, Stuart Carden, took a moment to reflect on the lasting impact of the organization’s founder, Dr. Patricia McIlrath. For those who don’t know, Dr. Mac founded KCRep back in 1964 and played a significant role as the chair of the UMKC Theatre Department. Her contributions were pivotal in shaping many notable Kansas City theatres, such as the Coterie Theatre and New Theatre & Restaurant. Carden expressed deep gratitude for their rich partnership, stating, “We are truly grateful for our rich partnership, which has made so much possible for our organization.”
Looking Ahead
As both organizations peel back the layers of growth, Carden expressed excitement for the future: “KCRep is now poised to grow and expand in new and exciting ways in the coming years throughout our community.” He acknowledged UMKC’s bold strategic plans too, reinforcing that this next step feels quite natural for both groups as they prepare to forge ahead.
UMKC’s Ambitious Plans
In alignment with this change, UMKC announced plans to renovate and expand the James C. Olson Performing Arts Center. This is pretty big news for the conservatory students, as it means they will continue to have access to the vibrant professional theatre scene Kansas City has to offer. Courtney Crappell, Dean of the UMKC Conservatory, weighed in on the situation, describing it as “a story of success for UMKC and KCRep.” She also mentioned looking forward to “the future renovation and expansion” of the Arts Center, which should bring even more excitement to the local arts scene.
