KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Your Weekly Weather Update
Hello, friends! It’s Monday, and what a way to start the week by diving into our recent weather happenings and what lies ahead. We recently enjoyed some much-needed rain in Kansas City, and I’m here to tell you all about it!
Rainfall Recap
Let’s take a look back at the rainfall we received recently. Officially, at the Kansas City International Airport, we measured a solid 1.31 inches from this recent rain event. Interestingly, while that number seems promising, we’re still sitting close to 5 inches below average for the year. Without that rain, we could have faced a staggering 6 inches below average!
It’s worth noting that KCI had one of the lower totals, as areas along and east of Interstate 35 saw significantly more rain, with totals reaching between 2 to 4 inches. Some even recorded 4 to 6 inches, especially in the more fortunate spots along the heavy rain band stretching from the Texas panhandle all the way to eastern Missouri. Regardless of the exact numbers, we can all agree that all that rain was beneficial since many areas have been crying out for moisture.
Next Up: An Interesting Weather Setup
As we look ahead to the week, get ready, because we have an interesting weather setup on the horizon! From Tuesday to Saturday, we will be tracking a storm system moving in from the north, coinciding with the formation of a hurricane in the southeast Gulf of Mexico.
By Wednesday, the upper-level flow will show that our storm system will be forming in Arkansas, while the tropical system is intensifying east of the Yucatan Peninsula. By Friday, we expect this system to evolve into a big closed low over northern Louisiana as the hurricane enters Georgia after making landfall in the Florida panhandle.
What Does This Mean for Kansas City?
Even though hurricanes making landfall in Florida won’t directly affect Kansas City, there could be some *indirect effects* coming our way. Here’s what you can expect day-by-day:
Tuesday
Be prepared for a day filled with a mix of sun and clouds along with a few showers and thunderstorms. You might experience a brief downpour here and there, followed by sunshine. Highs will be in the cozy 70s, and winds will be light. Just a heads-up, some thunderstorms might toss a wind gust or two at you, registered between 20-30 mph.
Wednesday
Ah, Wednesday promises to be a lovely fall day! With the storm system to our south, you’ll get to enjoy splendid weather, just in time for midweek relaxation.
Thursday
On Thursday, we’ll be keeping our eyes on the hurricane making landfall in the Florida panhandle. While that unfolds far away, we should still experience a nice day ourselves, with highs again in the 70s and lows dipping into the 50s. And yes, gentle breezes will accompany us!
Friday-Saturday
As we wrap up the week, the remnants of the hurricane will be hanging around near Charlotte, North Carolina. We are expecting some potential rain moving towards Kansas City and south, as long as the upper low drifts in our direction. There’s still some uncertainty about how far north and west this rain could track, depending on that upper low’s movement.
