Kansas City, Mo. — Excitement is building as Union Pacific’s legendary ‘Big Boy’ No. 4014, the world’s largest steam locomotive, prepares to make its way to Kansas City as part of the fall leg of its “Heartland of America Tour”. This remarkable train will be stopping in several locations across Kansas and Missouri, giving fans and railroad enthusiasts a chance to witness history in motion.

Starting at the end of August, Big Boy will kick off its journey in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and continue through ten states over the span of eight weeks, including a series of special stops in Kansas and Missouri. The tour will see the locomotive traverse scenic landscapes and meet eager fans along the way.

  • Saturday, Oct. 19:
    • 9 a.m.: Depart Salina, Kan. to Hays, Kan.

While public rides on the Big Boy aren’t generally available, there is a unique opportunity to bid on one of four cab rides from now until Aug. 19. The auction proceeds will benefit both the Union Pacific Railroad Museum and the Union Pacific Friend-to-Friend Network, a charitable program aimed at assisting railroad families in need.
