Juneteenth 2024 Celebrations in Kansas and Missouri
Juneteenth, the long-standing tradition celebrating the end of slavery in America, is being observed across Kansas and Missouri. This year’s festivities include talent shows, barbecues, movie nights, parades, and concerts, embracing the spirit of unity and commemoration on this historic day.
With communities taking a stand to celebrate the African-American culture and educate the masses about the significance of Juneteenth, the celebrations have become a part of local tradition across numerous cities and towns. Here is a closer look at local events, as they unfold across Kansas and Missouri.
Hutchinson, Kansas
Talented individuals from all age groups are showing off their skills at a Talent Show at Chester I. Lewis Plaza. The event is followed by a BBQ and Movie Night, offering inflatables, crafts, games, and interactive sessions with the local NAACP Youth. Further activities at the Stringer Fine Arts Center include a Blood Drive, a brunch with guest speakers, and a Hair Show.
Junction City, Kansas
Junction City is hosting a Juneteenth Festival at Heritage Park. The event features a live DJ, food and craft vendors, informative presentations, and a kids’ zone.
Kansas City, Missouri
Kansas City is kick-starting their celebration with a ‘Rise & Shine Workout’ at the Jay McShann Pavilion. This is followed by a Gospel Jubilee and the 2024 Juneteenth Heritage Festival in the Jazz District. There is a star-studded line-up featuring Crystal Aiken, Kelly Price, Ashley Brewer, and Kansas City Boys & Girls Choir. To round off the festival, there is a Brunch & Learn featuring prominent personalities from city administration and local businesses.
Lawrence, Kansas
Art by contemporary Black artists is on show at the Spencer Museum of Art, University of Kansas. The art exhibition explores broad themes including Black life, activism, Black love, and media representation. The exhibition draws inspiration from Emmett Till and his mother Mamie’s legacies, reflecting historical and contemporary racial justice movements.
Leavenworth, Kansas
Leavenworth is hosting a Twilight Parade & Festival at Haymaker Square, offering live music, games, food, and vendors.
Manhattan, Kansas
Manhattan is hosting a fashion show followed by a grilling contest and a concert featuring Grammy and Academy Award winner Regina Belle.
Wichita, Kansas
The celebrations in Wichita are spread across the week – starting with a bracelet making event at the Maya Angelou Northeast Library, followed by Books and Breakfast, Miss Juneteenth ICT at WSU CAC Theater, Sounds of Juneteenth ICT at McAdams Park, a Spirit AeroSystems Juneteenth ICT Parade, and finally ending with a gospel concert.
These events stand as a testimony to the perseverance of the African American community, their contribution to the rich culture and history of America, and a reminder of the need for continued progress towards equality.
