Kansas City Kids’ Fishing Derbies: Free, Fun Outdoor Events

The city of Kansas City is hooking the future generation of anglers through a series of kids’ fishing derbies slated for the first part of June. These outdoor, family-oriented events aim to create a fun and engaging environment for children and their families to explore, enjoy, and respect the beauty of nature while mastering fishing skills.

The 41st Annual Kids’ Fishing Derby, June 1

First up to cast is the 41st Annual Kids’ Fishing Derby, set to occur on June 1, hosted by the Jackson County Parks + Rec. The event takes place at Fleming Park in Lake Jacomo, with registrations opening at 8:30 a.m. This event is completely free and aims to please with a plethora of prizes and trophies to be won, along with a casting clinic for beginners.

The first 250 participants, under the age of 15, present at the event will even receive a free fishing pole courtesy of Pure Fishing. Children are encouraged to bring bait and a bucket for their catches. Awards will be given for the largest catch in each age group. This event is a sure way to kick off summertime fun and get kids excited about nature and the great outdoors.

Urban Kids Fishing Derby, June 15

Next in line is the Urban Kids Fishing Derby on June 15, hosted by Urban American Outdoors. The derby is set to take place at Spring Valley Park from 8:30 a.m. until noon. There are spots open for 200 anglers aged between 4 and 16 years, with a grand prize of $100 up for grabs.

Although no loaner rods will be provided this year, anglers are encouraged to bring their rod and gear, including a bucket, chair, and bait. Be sure to register for free as soon as possible as this tournament, with its generous grand prize and exciting atmosphere, is bound to fill quickly. This is a wonderful opportunity to not only engage in friendly competition but also to promote outdoor physical activity among children.

Both fishing derbies not only serve as a fun day outdoors but also provide an excellent learning opportunity.
