KC Police Officer Occupationally Injured During Traffic Stop Released From Hospital

KC Officer Wounded on Duty, Now Safe at Home

A Kansas City Police officer, who suffered injuries from a gunshot during a traffic stop earlier this week, has been released from the hospital. The good news bypassed the rumors of ongoing dire health conditions, as KCPD Captain Jake Becchina confirmed that the officer will continue his recovery path from the safety and comfort of his home.

Critical Encounter Aside Traffic

As Captain Jake Becchina recounts, the unsettling event took place just after 10 p.m. on Monday. The KC officers conducted a traffic stop by 46th and Benton in Kansas City due to suspicion of impairment related to the male driver. As per existing protocol, additional officers arrived at the scene to provide necessary assistance.

Escalation Leads to Gunshot

While officers attempted to take the suspect into custody, the interaction escalated rapidly. The suspect, now known to be Dwayne A. Barnes, somehow managed to pull out a firearm and discharged it causing critical injury to one of the officers on-site. However, due to the quick response and effective team effort, the remaining officers were able to apprehend Barnes and seize control of the firearm.

Emergency Response and Hospitalization

The shot officer was immediately transported to the nearest hospital for emergency medical attention while Barnes was taken to the local precinct. An air of uncertainty and concern loomed in the aftermath.

Suspect Barnes under Multiple Charges

Following the incident, Dwayne A. Barnes is now facing a bouquet of serious charges. The list includes two counts of Assault in the 1st Degree, two counts of Unlawful Use of a Weapon, four counts of Armed Criminal Action, and Resisting Arrest, as per the statements of the Jackson County Attorney’s office. Presently, Barnes is being held on a hefty $200,000 bond.

Taking the Path to Recovery

Even as the officer begins his journey to recovery from home, it is necessary to remember the constant perils and dangers our law enforcement officers face. We are grateful for their service and stand with them in hoping for a swift recovery for our injured officer. Thankfully, his release from the hospital marks the first step down that path.
