Kansas City streetcar undergoing upgrades with construction workers around.

News Summary

Kansas City’s beloved streetcar will be closing its service from January 27 to February 10. This pause is crucial for connecting the new riverfront extension to the line’s electrical system. During this period, RideKC buses will provide free transportation every 15 to 20 minutes, ensuring residents can still travel around the city. Road closures will occur in the River Market area, but access to the City Market remains open. Stay updated on changes and construction impacts.

Kansas City Streetcar Takes a Break for Exciting New Extensions!

Listen up, Kansas City! Starting from January 27 through February 10, the beloved KC Streetcar will be temporarily suspending its service. But don’t worry—this break is all in the name of progress! Workers will be busy connecting the new riverfront extension to the existing streetcar line’s electrical system and refreshing the rails.

What’s Happening During the Shutdown?

During the construction phase, you’ll see some changes in the bustling River Market area. New stops and tracks will be laid down, which means added convenience for all the streetcar riders out there once everything is up and running. Isn’t that exciting?

While the streetcar takes a little snooze, the RideKC buses will be stepping in to fill the gap. They’ll be serving passengers along the streetcar route, ensuring you can still get around town without much hassle.

Free Buses to the Rescue!

The free Streetcar Link bus will run every 15 to 20 minutes and will stop at most streetcar stops. So, if you’re planning a trip to downtown or the River Market, you’re still in luck! Just hop on the bus, and you’ll be on your way in no time.

Heads Up on Construction Zones!

Grand Boulevard between 2nd and 3rd Streets until April. So if your route involves that area, make sure to plan ahead!

Additionally, from January 27 to February 10, expect 3rd Street to be closed from Grand Boulevard to Walnut Street. The intersection of 3rd and Grand Boulevards will also be out of commission during this time. But don’t worry—access to the City Market remains open, ensuring you can still grab your favorite goodies while construction is underway.

Bridging Connections

And speaking of changes, keep an eye on the Grand Boulevard Bridge leading from the River Market to Berkley Riverfront Park as it will close for about a month and a half starting late February or early March through late April. This is just a part of the ongoing improvements that will ultimately make your commuting experience much better in the long run.

Fun fact: This bridge had actually seen temporary barriers during streetcar construction in the fall of 2024 as well. Seems like it’s just part of the urban metamorphosis!

Event Transportation for the KC Current Fans

And for those of you planning to catch some action at the CPKC Stadium, the KC Streetcar authority is collaborating with the KC Current to establish alternative routes to and from events. This way, you won’t miss out on the game-day excitement!

Test Runs Leading to Grand Openings

Meanwhile, testing for the Main Street extension recently kicked off the week of January 13. This phase will span six months, filled with tests and training to ensure everything runs smoothly before the public gets to enjoy the new ride. Initial testing has already begun to ensure that the vehicles have adequate clearance along the midtown streetcar lines. It’s all systems go!

So, while the Kansas City Streetcar enjoys its brief break, remember that this pause is a crucial step toward exciting new enhancements. Stay updated on service changes and construction impacts by texting “streetcar” to 816-685-8541. See you on the streets soon!
