21c Museum Hotel in Kansas City Unveils New “The Future is Female” Exhibition

The Future is Female: New free exhibit illuminates 21c Museum Hotel

In the heart of Kansas City’s library district, the 21c Museum Hotel stands as an artistic beacon amidst an array of hotel options. What sets it apart, however, is its dedication to exhibiting thought-provoking and progressive art from the current century while offering free admission 24 hours a day. The hotel’s commitment to connecting its patrons with contemporary art has garnered it the status of a community-favorite destination.

On April 25, the 21c Museum Hotel welcomed its latest exhibit, The Future is Female. The visionary behind this exhibit is Alice Gray Stites, the Chief Curator and Museum Director for the 21c hotel chain, who holds the responsibility for all things art within the hotel – from curation and programming to acquisitions.

New Exhibit Shines a Light on Womanhood

The Future is Female exhibition, which will be on display through March 2025, features 74 works from 48 artists, encapsulating a broad range of voices and perspectives. Themes of identity, consumer culture, and the quest for equality pervade the works, portraying the multifaceted and evolving definitions of womanhood.

Upon entering the lobby, guests are greeted by the artwork “Champ” by artist Zoë Buckman, a striking piece crafted from neon, glass, and leather that boldly illuminates the space. As you delve deeper into the exhibit, works by artists such as Gaela Erwin, Felix Cid, Yvette Molina, and Julie Blackmon (a local from Springfield, MO) explore the impact of the second wave of the Women’s Movement on the current cultural landscape.

‘The Future is Female’ Art Tours

Visitors can explore the museum hotel at leisure, or opt for one of the free art tours that take place every Thursday, from 5:30 – 6 p.m. Not only do the guided tours provide in-depth insights into the displayed artworks, but attendees also receive a voucher for 50% off select cocktails, wine, and beer at The Savoy restaurant, located within the 21c KC.

Art Inspires Cuisine at ‘The Future Is Female’ Dinner

To mark the opening of the exhibition, The Savoy hosted a special ‘The Future Is Female’ dinner wherein dishes were created by an array of talented female chefs from various 21c locations. Each culinary creation was inspired by the exhibit’s artwork. For instance, Sous Chef Adyen Bost of Kansas City used “Waterlily,” for inspiration, resulting in the delicious Hibiscus Cured Salmon Crudo.

Whether you are an art enthusiast, a foodie, or simply a curious culture seeker, the ‘The Future is Female’ exhibit at the 21c Museum Hotel guarantees an unforgettable experience. Venture to: 219 W 9th Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64105, for this unique exploration of the feminine narrative.
