Friday night was an exciting kickoff for the 20-Fungalore tour at the Uptown Theater, as the popular podcast My Brother, My Brother and Me attracted a lively and receptive audience.
The podcast, known affectionately to insiders as MBMBAM, is hosted by brothers Justin, Travis, and Griffin McElroy. The three use wit and humor to answer life’s queries such as “How many times is too many for going on the Kansas City Zoo Sky Safari?” or “Is it acceptable to encourage my 6-year-old’s burp humor even if it’s really funny?”.
Adhering to the theme of 20-Fungalore, which centers around a metaphysical mushroom god that grants desires, fans turned out in attire adorned with mushroom prints, hats, and even full costumes. The stage was taken by the brothers at 7:15; both Justin and Travis sported mushroom prints, while Griffin came as Toad from the legendary Mario Bros universe.
Act One was filled with humor and creativity, with the brothers answering pre-selected audience-submitted questions. A diverse set of inquiries were fielded, from the fascinating – an apartment resident asking the suitability of shaving their legs on the balcony – to the absurd – a zoo member sincerely asking the number of consecutive rides one can take on a ride at the zoo before it appears strange.
Each brother had their own bit or games between these questions. Griffin engaged the audience with ‘Minion Quotes‘, where he presented Facebook memes with covered cartoon characters, his brothers and the audience having to guess who the mystery character was. Travis amused everyone with ‘Work of Fart: Out of ConSHREKt‘, challenging the audience to identify a piece of media distorted and obscured with Shrek images. Justin shared historical mishaps of major fast-food corporations in their attempts at Pride Month advertising, in his long-running segment ‘Munch Squad‘.
Intermission featured a montage of clips from their YouTube live show ‘McElroy Family Clubhouse,’ maintaining the high energy atmosphere. Act Two allowed fans selected from the crowd to come up and posit their questions live. Thought-provoking questions, such as how a dog groomer could get better tips or how a biology teacher could tactfully inform people of the presence of a snake, were asked and discussed.
As the event drew to a close, it became abundantly clear that all in attendance had had a great time. The podcast My Brother, My Brother and Me successfully turned a regular Friday night into an evening of laughs, thought-provoking questions, and unexpected revelations. Not only did they bring smiles and laughters to their ardent fans, but they also won over the hearts of some first-time viewers.
This event was a stark reminder of how entertainment can be universally enjoyed, regardless of one’s prior involvement or familiarity with the content. The McElroy brothers’ ability to blend humor with wisdom in such a relatable format proved to be an enriching experience for all in attendance.
